ATHENS, Ohio — With four starters injured and six freshmen in the lineup, NC State had a big hill to climb in its dual wrestling match Sunday at Ohio University. The Wolfpack never made it up the hill, losing eight of 10 bouts and falling to the Bobcats 33-7.
“We knew it would be tough even if our entire lineup was healthy and on the mat,” Wolfpack coach Carter Jordan said. “Ohio University is a very strong team, and this is a tough place for a visiting team. Their fans were right on top of our bench, and I’m not using that as an excuse. I’m glad our kids got to experience something like that. Part of the learning process is learning how to deal with a hostile environment.”
The match started ominously for NC State when sophomore 125-pounder Mike Moreno got hurt and defaulted two minutes into the opening bout. Ohio followed that up with major decisions at 133 and 141 to take a 14-0 lead in the team scoring before junior 149-pounder Bobby Ward got the Pack on the scoreboard with a 13-4 major over Josh Speelman.
Ward’s victory at 149 made it 14-4, but Ohio quickly added seven points with Clay Tucker’s 15-3 major over back-up Juan Stimpson and Kevin Christensen’s 5-2 decision over Ray Ward at 165. Quinton Godley scored the Wolfpack’s final three points with an 8-3 decision over Steve Wilson at 174, but that was it.
Ohio’s Nick Purdue pinned Cedric Moore at 184, and Erik Schuth won a 15-1 major over backup Christian McClean to make it 30-7 and salt away the team victory. Andy Hartshorn’s 9-4 decision over heavyweight Eloheim Pama was window dressing.
“Mike got hurt in the first match and we had to default,” Jordan said. “That’s six points right there, and that makes it almost impossible against a quality opponent. On top of that, we had backups at 133, 157 and 197. That’s four matches.”
NC State, which fell to 4-6 with the loss, returns to action on Wednesday at Boiling Springs, N.C., for a doubleheader with Gardner-Webb and Appalachian State. The Wolfpack will taken on Gardner-Webb at 5 p.m. The match vs. Appalachian State will follow.
“The process continues for us,” Jordan said. “We have a couple of days of practice before we go to Gardner-Webb, and we have to use that time to continue to work and get better.”
