RALEIGH, N.C. – Thanks to a 3-0 start to the 2009 season, the NC State men’s soccer team has cracked the top-25 in three national polls this week. After receiving votes in the preseason in most polls, the Pack jumped to No. 18 in the NSCAA Coaches’ Poll, No. 19 in Soccer America and No. 22 in CollegeSoccerNews.com’s poll after the first week of college soccer action.
NC State started its season with a 3-1 win at home over Winthrop last Tuesday, and over the weekend recorded back-to-back shutouts (4-0 over Denver and 1-0 over Columbia) at the Duke Classic to claim the tournament title. Both Winthrop and Denver went to the NCAA Tournament a year ago.
Junior defender Tyler Lassiter was named the MVP of the Duke Classic, after scoring a pair of goals in the Denver win and leading the defense into giving up just one goal in 270 minutes so far this season. Lassiter was also named to Soccer America’s team of the week.
Lassiter was joined on the Duke All-Tournament team by seniors Ronnie Bouemboue, Korede Aiyegbusi, Alan Sanchez and Romulo Manzano.
The Wolfpack will put their new rankings to the test this weekend, as NC State travels to North Carolina to open up ACC play. The Tar Heels have started the season 2-0-1, and are ranked in the top-five in all three polls (No. 2 in Soccer America, No. 3 in the NSCAA Coaches Poll, and No. 4 in CollegeSoccerNews.com). The game is set for 7:00 p.m. Saturday in Chapel Hill, and admission is free.
