DURHAM, N.C. – Led by junior Tyler Lassiter’s pair of goals, the NC State men’s soccer team shutout Denver 4-0 in the first game of the Duke Classic. The Wolfpack (2-0) scored three of its four goals off of corner kicks, and also shut out its first opponent of the season.
For the second straight game to start the season, the Pack would find the back of the net twice in the first 45 minutes of play. Today, NC State would take advantage of a pair of corner kicks to gain the 2-0-halftime lead.
Less than four minutes into the contest, senior Federico Nachmann sent his corner kick to the near post where classmate Chrystel Bakong got a foot to it and slotted home the first goal of the game at the 3:32 mark.
The Pack ended the half as it began, with another score off a corner. This time it was senior Alan Sanchez’s corner in the 43rd minute that went to the back post where Lassiter kicked home the goal at the 42:38 mark.
The Pack held a 9-5 shot advantage at the half, with six of its shots on goal compared to just one for Denver.
NC State would add a pair of insurance goals in the second half. Lassiter was once again the recipient of a Sanchez corner kick in the 60th minute. This time Sanchez’s serve went into the middle of the box where Lassiter headed home the score at the 59:39 mark.
The Pack’s final score would come in the 83rd minute. Sophomore Watt Williams found senior Ronnie Bouemboue just outside the penalty box, and after a quick turn, Bouemboue slotted home the shot at the 82:27 mark.
NC State controlled the flow of play throughout, and outshot the Pioneers (0-1) 17-9, including a decisive 9-1 in shots on goal. Senior Christopher Widman had to make just one save for the shutout.
The Pack returns to action on Sunday, facing Columbia in the Duke Classic at 12:00 p.m.
