SPARTANBURG, S.C. – NC State volleyball dropped a 3-1 decision to UNC Asheville at the South Carolina Upstate Tournament on Friday, Sept. 4. Earlier in the afternoon the Wolfpack swept The Citadel in straight sets.
The Pack’s loss sends both teams’ records to 4-2 on the young season.
“I’m disappointed that we didn’t follow the adjustments, but I am confident that we learned from this loss and will be better tomorrow,” said head coach Charita J. Stubbs.
Kelly Wood was sensational again, dropping 17 kills and three service aces while roping in 12 digs. Alex Smith lifted 40 set assists and had nine scores, while Keri DeMar and Jana Angel added eight kills each. Lindsay Benac’s 13 digs was a team-best.
NC State took the opening set 20-25 behind a match-best .292 hitting percentage. Wood landed two quick services aces on top of four kills to spark the offense, as five of her teammates added kills of their own. The Bulldogs took the upper hand in the second frame however, picking up a 25-22 victory after fighting through six tied scores and two lead changes.
Things only got worse for NC State in dropping sets three and four, 25-14 and 25-18 respectively. The Pack hit just .031 in the third stanza with 11 kills and 10 attack errors, despite knotting the score six times. The Bulldogs lead throughout the entire fourth and final column even though the Pack committed just three attack errors.
NC State will finish its stay at the South Carolina Upstate Tournament tomorrow, Saturday, Aug. 5, with a 10:30 a.m. match against the host USC Upstate Spartans.
