SPARTANBURG, S.C. – NC State volleyball put away The Citadel in straight-sets on Friday, Sept. 4, during the team’s first match of the day at the South Carolina Upstate Tournament. The win moves the Pack to 4-1 on the year, while the Bulldogs fall to 1-4.
Kelly Wood led the Wolfpack in both kills (13) and digs (18), while Keri DeMar added nine scores. Alex Smith racked up 38 assists along with eight kills and 10 digs, and Jana Angel secured five total blocks.
Tatum Jestila led The Citadel with 12 kills.
It took a little bonus play for the Wolfpack to grab the opening tally by a 27-25 score as the Bulldogs hit a match-high .282 with 15 kills. But NC State trumped that line, hitting .324 with 17 kills while outlasting 11 tied scores and four lead changes. Lisa Kretchman supplied four kills for the Pack, while Smith, DeMar, Angel and Isis Gardner all had three.
Strong Wolfpack defense and a struggling Bulldogs offense culminated in a 25-21 NC State victory in the second stanza. The Citadel’s nine kills were offset by four attack errors for a match-low .152 clip, while Wood exploded for eight kills while roping in six digs on defense.
The Pack’s offense cruised on a season-best .419 hitting percentage in the third and final frame, using 16 kills and just three miscues to secure another 25-21 decision. Wood and Gardner both recorded four kills, while Gardner and Angel each had three block assists.
NC State will take on UNC Asheville later this afternoon at 4:30 p.m.
