W. Soccer Opens ACC Play With Virginia, Va. Tech

RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State opens Atlantic Coast Conference play this week with two homes games at Dail Soccer Field. The Wolfpack will entertain No. 14 Virginia on Thursday at 7 p.m., while Virginia Tech comes to town Sunday for a 1 p.m. match.
The Pack looks to bounce back from a 1-0 setback at Charlotte on Sunday. The club was limited to just five shots on goal.
Freshman Kara Blosser’s team-leading 13 points ranks 10th in the ACC, while her six goals are good for a tie for fifth in the league.
Sophomore Paige Dugal is tied for 10th with five goals on the year. She is also tied for third in the league along with classmate Tanya Cain with two game-winning goals.
NC State sophomore keeper Kim Kern has started all eight matches, allowing just five goals in over 704 minutes. Her 0.64 goals against average is sixth in the ACC, while her save percentage ranks seventh at .783. Kern is tied for fourth with three shutouts.
Cain is one of five players in the ACC to have three goals in a game this season. She was named ACC Co-Player of the Week last week on Sept. 1after the hat trick against Davidson.
NC State is 3-1-1 at home this season and its average home attendance of 851 is good for fourth in the conference.
Scouting Virginia (5-1-2)
No. 14 ranked Virginia has won its last two games and is unbeaten in seven straight since an opening-season 1-0 loss to No. 12 Penn State back on Aug. 21.
Virginia is one of only two schools nationally to have five players averaging over a point per game this season.
Meghan Lenczyk leads the Cavaliers in scoring with 14 points on six goals and two assists. Meanwhile, Lauren Alwine (11 points), Caroline Miller (10 points), Sinead Farrelly (nine points) and Jess Rostedt (nine points) round out the balanced scoring attack.
In goal, Chantel Jones has started all eight matches and owns a 0.48 GAA in over 750 minutes of action. She has three shutouts and has made 21 saves.
Scouting Virginia Tech (6-2)
The Hokies will host ACC foe Clemson on Thursday, before heading down to Raleigh for Sunday’s match with the Wolfpack.
Virginia Tech has won three straight after being routed 5-0 at the hands of No 4 Stanford on Sept. 6 at the UNC Greensboro Tournament.
Kelly Conheeney leads the offense with 12 points on five goals and two assists. Additionally, Jennifer Harvey and Marika Gray have each found the back of the net on four occasions so far in 2009.
Netminder Robin Chidester has played in all eight matches and made four starts. She has a 1.82 GAA with 19 saves and a 3-1 record, while Rebekah Brook has started three games (five appearances) and owns a 0.93 GAA and a 2-1 slate.
All-Time Series
Virginia has a 19-12-2 lead in the all-time series. NC State hasn’t beaten the Cavaliers since 1995. The Wolfpack has a slight 4-3 edge over the Hokies.
