GREENSBORO, N.C. – NC State lost to host UNC Greensboro, 3-2, on Saturday, Sept. 19 in its final match at the UNC Greensboro Volleyball Tournament. The Wolfpack falls to 7-8 with the loss, while the Spartans improve to 6-7.
Keri DeMar landed 11 kills for the Pack, and Jana Angel had nine blocks. Kelly Burns (18) and Alex Smith (14) combined for 32 set assists, while Lindsay Benac (21), Kelly Wood (21) and Smith (15) all recorded double-digit dig totals. Taylor Pritchard added two aces.
Kretchman was named to the all-tournament team for her play throughout the weekend.
The Wolfpack offense dropped 10 kills in taking the opening set 20-25, but the Spartans answered back by grabbing the next two frames by scores of 25-15 and 27-25. The Pack trailed late at 23-20 in the third stanza, but ripped off four straight to take a brief 23-24 lead. That lead was short lived however, as UNCG immediately tied the score and later grabbed the win on a Kayleigh Knerr ace.
The Pack won the fourth set in extra play, 24-26, with its back against the wall to stay afloat. The offense used a match-best 11 kills, and Wood roped in eight digs, while the Spartans hit at just .052.
UNC Greensboro wound up taking the fifth and final go-round 15-9, out-hitting the Pack .444 to .050 while dropping nine kills and committing just one attack error.
NC State will open conference play next weekend on the road, traveling to Georgia Tech and Clemson.
