CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Kirby Stenard scored the only goal of the match for Charlotte in a 1-0 victory over the NC State women's soccer team Sunday afternoon at Transamerica Field.
The 49ers (6-2) defense recorded their fifth shutout of the season while limiting NC State (5-2-1) to only five shots. Wolfpack senior defender Gia Cipollini had three of her team's shots.
"It was an old fashion defense struggle that we unfortunately came out on the wrong end of today," NC State coach Steve Springthorpe said. "Give credit to Charlotte for scoring off its corner kick and they did a good job of limiting our opportunities on offense."
Stenard recorded her second straight game-winning goal when she deflected a Sam Huecker corner into the right side of the goal in the 53rd minute. Stenard's goal was her third of the season.
Charlotte finished the game with an 11-5 advantage in shots.
Wolfpack keeper Kim Kern made two saves, while Charlotte's Lauren Brown made one save for her fourth clean sheet of the season.
NC State opens ACC play at home against No. 16 Virginia on Thursday at 7 p.m.
