Volleyball Heads to USC Upstate Tournament

The Pack will take on the Citadel (12:30 p.m.) and UNC Ashville (4:30 p.m.) on Friday, before battling host South Carolina Upstate on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. GoPack.com will carry live stats for all three matches, while ASun.TV will broadcast a live pay-per-view video stream of the Wolfpack’s match on Saturday.
NC State swept both Morgan State and Charleston Southern before downing Davidson in four sets this past weekend as it hosted the Hilton RTP Classic at Reynolds Coliseum. The Pack’s lone loss came at the hands of Campbell.
Isis Gardner put up a team-high 39 kills, while Sarah Griggs (28), Jana Angel (23) and Lisa Kretchman (20) all made significant offensive contributions of their own. Alex Smith pushed up 118 set assists in addition to her 19 kills, as Lindsey Benac corralled 50 digs. Kretchman also secured 10 total blocks, while Griggs landed eight service aces.
The Citadel enters the weekend after going 1-3 last week in nearby Durham, N.C. The Bulldogs grabbed a 3-1 decision over North Carolina Central, despite falling to Georgia State (3-0), High Point (3-1) and UNC Asheville (3-2).
UNC Asheville carries a 2-2 record with wins over South Carolina State (3-0) and UNC Asheville (3-2). The Bulldogs dropped matches to UNC Wilmington (3-1) and Elon (3-1) last weekend in Durham, competing at the same tournament as the Citadel. UNC Asheville will host Western Carolina on Wednesday night before making the trek to Spartanburg.
South Carolina Upstate also stands at 2-2 after splitting four matches last weekend at the Braves Kick-Off Classic in Peoria, Ill. The Spartans grabbed wins against Lehigh (3-1) and Chicago State (3-0), while falling to Bradley (3-1) and IUPUI (3-0).
NC State posts a 3-1 record all-time versus the tournament field, going 1-0 against the Citadel and 2-1 against UNC Asheville. Saturday’s match between the Pack and South Carolina Upstate will mark the first meeting between the two programs.
