RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State continues its four-game home stretch with a Thursday match against UNLV at 5 p.m. from Dail Soccer Field.
The Pack is off to a perfect 3-0 start to the season and has outscored its opponents 9-1 so far in 2009. After back-to-back shutouts to open the year, the red and white came out on top 4-1 over Davidson last Friday.
Sophomore forward Tanya Cain was instrumental in NC State earning two wins last week as she scored four times. Those tallies included a pair of game winners that led to her being named ACC Co-Player of the Week on Tuesday. She scored three times in the win over Davidson and also added one against Campbell.
Freshman Kara Blosser also scored two goals last week, one each at Campbell and against the visiting Wildcats.
NC State keeper Kim Kern has been a stalwart in goal through three matches, allowing just one goal in 261 minutes. Her 0.34 goals against average is fifth in the ACC, while her save percentage ranks third at .857. Kern is tied for the league lead with two shutouts.
Cain is tied for the ACC lead with two game-winning goals, is second with four goals scored and is tied for sixth in points with eight. Meanwhile, sophomore Paige Dugal and junior Alyson Santilli are tied for eighth in assists with two helpers apiece.
Scouting UNLV
The Rebels are coached by former Wolfpack keeper Kat Mertz, who is in her fifth season as the head coach of the program. Mertz played at NC State from 1994-97 and still holds the ACC record with 436 career saves.
UNLV has a 1-1-1 record so far in 2009, having picked up its first win of the season last time out with a 2-1 victory over Cal-State Bakersfield. The Rebels have scored just three goals this season in three games.
Jamie McCoy, Shannon Hughes and Colette Jepson have each provided one goal for the club. Keeper Alicia Lugo, a second team All-Mountain West selection last season, has played all 290 minutes between the pipes and owns a 1.24 GAA and has made 18 saves.
UNLV was picked fifth in the MWC, the lowest spot for the Rebels since the 2000 campaign.
