RALEIGH, N.C. – The 23rd-ranked NC State men’s soccer team will play its first ACC home contest this weekend, as the Wolfpack (4-1, 0-1 ACC) will host No. 4 Maryland (3-1, 1-0 ACC) this Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. at the Dail Soccer Field. Admission will be free for this weekend’s game.
NC State has had a strong start to its 2009 campaign, starting off 4-1. The Pack is currently ranked No. 23 nationally in both the NSCAA and College Soccer News weekly polls, and this is the second straight week NC State has been in the polls.
Dating back to last season, the Pack has won 12 of the last 16 contests, with each loss coming at the hands of a team ranked in the top-five at the time.
The Pack’s offense has outscored the opposition 14-4 on the young season. NC State is coming off of a 5-1 shelling of Campbell this past Tuesday.
Senior Ronnie Bouemboue leads the Pack with his four goals and 12 points, while classmate Alan Sanchez has a team-high five assists through five games this season. The Pack’s defense has also been a strong point, giving up less than a goal a game. Senior keeper Christopher Widman has played every minute in the Pack nets, recording a pair of shutouts and a GAA of 0.80.
Maryland enters this weekend’s contest at 3-1 and 1-0 in ACC play. The Terps are currently ranked No. 4 nationally in both the NSCAA and College Soccer News weekly polls. Maryland was last season’s NCAA Champion, defeating North Carolina in the championship game.
Maryland is coming off of a 7-0 win against Duquesne Tuesday night. Jason Herrick and Casey Townsend have each scored a team-high three goals on the season.
Maryland leads the all-times series with NC State, 43-19-5, including a slight 16-11-3 edge in games played in Raleigh. This season marks the second straight year Maryland has played at NC State.
Last season, No. 6 Maryland edged the Wolfpack 2-1. Maryland struck first just three minutes into the game, and added a second score in the 25th minute. NC State got on the scoreboard with a penalty kick in the 33rd minute, but could not find the equalizer.
