Volleyball Drops Five-Setter to Rutgers

RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State volleyball fell to Rutgers in five sets on Friday, Sept. 11, in the Raleigh Crabtree Valley Marriott Classic at Reynolds Coliseum. The loss sends the Wolfpack to 5-4 on the year, while the Scarlet Knights climb to 2-6.
Sarah Griggs (12), Margaret Salata (11) and Alex Smith (10) combined for 33 of the team’s 52 kills, while Alex Smith roped in 36 set assists. Lindsay Benac secured 23 digs with Kelly Wood adding 15 of her own. Kelly Burns dropped five service aces, while Lisa Kretchman’s six total blocks led the Wolfpack defense.
Rutgers took the opening frame 25-20 before the Pack answered back with a 21-25 win in the second. The Pack took its first lead at 15-16 on a Hannah Curtis attack error, eventually leading by as many as four points.
The Scarlet Knights reclaimed control by taking the third stanza 25-20, setting the table for NC State to knot things up again by winning the fourth 15-25. The Pack cruised on a .355 hitting percentage, its best of the night, with Salata supplying five scores.
The Pack led 11-14 and was serving for match point in the fifth and final set, but it wasn’t in the cards as Rutgers ultimately came out on top 16-14. Both squads had its poorest hitting performances of the match, but the Scarlet Knight’s 10 kills and .120 clip led the way over NC State’s .037 showing.
NC State will face George Mason (noon) and Dartmouth (7 p.m.) tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 12, at Reynolds Coliseum.
