George Mason Trumps Volleyball

RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State dropped a 3-1 match to George Mason in its first game on the day at the Raleigh Crabtree Valley Marriott Classic on Saturday, Sept. 12. The loss moves the Wolfpack to 5-5 on the year, while the Patriots climb to 8-3.
Sarah Griggs led the Pack offense with nine kills, while Alex Smith, Margaret Salata and Isis Gardner each added seven. Kelly Wood secured a team-best 29 digs in the libero role, while Salata had three total blocks. Lindsay Benac scored the team’s lone service ace.
The Wolfpack dropped the first set 25-20, before stumbling 25-19 in the second. NC State then answered in the third, winning 22-25 as George Mason hit a match-worst .071. Smith, Griggs, Lisa Kretchman and Keri DeMar all aided the offense with multiple kills.
Both teams put up its most complete performances of the day in the fourth and final set, but the Patriots .323 swinging clip outshined the Pack’s .139 for a 25-18 decision. State led briefly and knotted the score on eight occasions, but several George Mason mini-runs put play out of reach.
NC State will take on Dartmouth tonight at 7 p.m.
