The women’s golf team opens its season this weekend like it has the last five years at the Cougar Classic in Charleston, S.C., at the Yeaman’s Hall Club hosted by the College of Charleston.
The field includes eight teams that finished last year ranked in the top-50 according to the Golfweek/Sagarin Ratings.
The Pack is coming off an eighth-straight NCAA Regional appearance in 2009 and looks to get the season rolling with a good start to the fall with 36 holes on Sunday, followed by 18 on Monday down in the low country of South Carolina.
The Wolfpack must replace the program’s finest player in Lauren Doughtie, who has graduated and gone on to the FUTURES TOUR.
Returning to lead this team is senior Emily Street, who ranks just behind Doughtie (75.5) on the career scoring average list with a 76.3. The Forest City, N.C., native has 10 top-20 finishes at NC State and three top-10 placements.
Classmate Kathleen Strandberg is also back for her final go around with the Wolfpack. The native of Greensboro, N.C., had a strong finish to her junior season by finishing tied for 13th at the ACC Championships. As an upperclassmen she will be counted on to provide leadership to a group of three freshmen this year.
Junior Julie Saleeby has qualified for the top spot in the Wolfpack lineup this weekend. The Raleigh native got her season off to a great start last fall when she opened with a three-under 69 at the Cougar Classic. She posted seven birdies during her round and was tied for third after 18 holes.
Also back in the fold this week is sophomore Meghan Chapman. The Seminole, Fla., native had a solid first year last season with a 76.9 scoring average in nine events. She tied the school record with a four-under 68 during the final round at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate in Knoxville, Tenn.
The only newcomer in the starting lineup this week is junior transfer Brooke Baker. She played the last two seasons at Tulsa.
