RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State volleyball dropped a tough five-set decision to DePaul in its first match at the Raleigh Crabtree Valley Marriott Classic on Friday, Sept. 11. The loss moves the Wolfpack to 5-3 on the year, while the Blue Demons climb to 4-3.
Three Pack netters landed double-digit kills, with Isis Gardner (13), Kelly Wood (11) and Keri DeMar (10) combining for 34 of the team’s 58 total. Alex Smith lifted 45 set assists, and Margaret Salata racked up five total blocks in her season debut. Smith (15), Lindsay Benac (14) and Wood (10) all collected sizeable dig totals.
NC State dropped the first set 25-23, before battling back to collect the second frame 20-25. Gardner put six points on the board via the kill, while Wood and DeMar added three each. Smith, Benac and Taylor Pritchard all added service aces.
The Pack stayed on top by grabbing the third stanza 23-25. Using a match-best .394 hitting percentage, NC State took advantage of the Blue Demon’s .158 hitting clip and fought off eight tied scores behind five kills from Wood.
DePaul kept the Pack at bay by grabbing the fourth set 25-22. A three-point run gave the Blue Demons the lead at 13-10, but the Pack stayed it in late and trimmed its deficit to two at 24-22 on a Gardner kill. But a Sammy Geiger score on the next play sent the match into a fifth and final set.
The Blue Demons wasted no time in taking charge in the fifth set, grabbing the first five points and eventually moving its lead to 10-3. The Pack would only manage three more points before DePaul closed out play at 15-6.
NC State will take on Rutgers tonight at 7 p.m.
