GREENSBORO, N.C. NC State sophomore forward Tanya Cain and Virginia freshman forward Caroline Miller have been named Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Soccer Co-Players of the Week after each led their teams to a pair of non-conference victories.
Cain, a native of Pinebluff, N.C., scored a pair of game-winning goals last week in leading the undefeated Wolfpack to a perfect 2-0 record.
She came up with the game’s first goal at Campbell in the 13th minute to give NC State a little breathing room in the first half of a tight battle with the host Camels. The Pack added another marker in the second half for a 2-0 win.
Back home on Friday, Cain exploded for her first career three-goal match in a 4-1 win over in-state rival Davidson. The rain didn’t hold back the 5-5 dynamo as she scored twice in the span of three minutes during the first half as the Pack went into intermission up 3-0.
Cain found the back of the net again in the second half to cap the evenings scoring festivities. The last goal in the 62nd minute gave Cain her first hat trick since high school.
She became the first Wolfpacker to score thee times in a game since Lindsay Vera did it against those same Wildcats in the 2007 season opener.
Cain leads the Pack with four goals and eight points this season
NC State (3-0) hosts UNLV on Thursday at 5 p.m. from Dail Soccer Field. The Rebels are coached by former NC State keeper Kat Mertz.
