Volleyball Fends Off Davidson, 3-1

RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State capped off a 3-1 opening weekend by downing Davidson on Saturday, Aug. 29, 3-1. The Wildcats fell to 0-4 with the loss.
Jana Angel led the Pack offense with 10 kills and five total blocks, while Lisa Kretchman supplied eight kills. Alex Smith lifted 34 assists, and Lindsay Benac supplied 11 digs. Sarah Griggs landed two service aces.
NC State trailed late but willed itself to collect a hard-fought 26-24 decision in the starting column. Behind 23-24 the Pack ripped off three-straight to claim the opening tally, with Keri DeMar lacing five kills – several of which landed on the court down the stretch of play.
Davidson came out with a bang to start the second set, grabbing the first 13 scores before an Anna Bradbury service error put the Pack on the board. The Wildcats ended up taking the frame 11-25, as the Pack hit a paltry -.120 with its five kills erased by eight attack errors.
Whatever head coach Charita J. Stubbs said to her team between the second and third frames worked, as the Pack came out of the break and quickly grabbed seven of the first nine points. The offense continued clicking throughout, resulting in 13 kills for a weekend-best .364 hitting clip, as the Pack steamrolled the Wildcats 25-12.
The lead on the scoreboard seesawed back and forth between the two programs for over half of the fourth stanza before a Jorden Benedict service error and Smith kill put the Pack up by two at 16-14. Davidson hung around kept the Pack honest, shrinking the lead to 21-18 on a Griggs attack error, but NC State grabbed four-straight points to seal the deal at 25-18.
Isis Gardner was named to the NC State Hilton RTP Classic all-tournament team, posting a team-high 39 kills.
NC State will head to Spartanburg, S.C., next weekend for the South Carolina Upstate Tournament.
