RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State volleyball dropped a 3-0 decision to Campbell at the Hilton RTP Classic on Saturday, Aug. 29. The loss moves the Pack to 2-1 on the year, while the Camels climb to 3-0.
Isis Gardner led the Wolfpack offense with 10 kills and three total blocks, while Lindsay Benac supplied 12 digs. Alex Smith lifted 18 assists and dropped five kills, while Sarah Griggs contributed seven scores.
Campbell busted out to a quick 5-0 lead in the first set, prompting Wolfpack head coach Charita J. Stubbs to call for a timeout. The Pack responded by taking five of the next six scores to trim the Camels lead to 6-5, but within a matter of moments Campbell was back up 12-6. NC State kept battling, eventually knotting things up at 15-all on a Gardner solo block. A combo block from Jana Angel and Gardner gave the Pack its first lead at 15-16, forcing the Camels to talk things over in the bench area. Following the break CU rattled off six of seven, reclaiming a 21-17 advantage, before winning 25-18.
NC State was out-hit by Campbell .556 to .139 in dropping the second frame 25-15. The Pack tied the score on three occasions but never led as the Camels rode the offense of Ashley Weers, Emily Werner and Caroline Hammersley who combined for 11 scores.
The Pack’s 11 kills were offset by its 10 attack errors in the third and final set, a 25-17 losing effort. Gardner and Griggs combined for nine kills, but the Pack’s inability to score on attack attempts hampered its game. The Camels didn’t fare much better, hitting at just. 158, but were able to keep NC State from ever taking a lead.
NC State will close out the Hilton RTP Classic against Davidson tonight at 7 p.m.
