RALEIGH, N.C. – Isis Gardner dropped a career-best 19 kills en route to leading NC State (2-0) to a 3-0 win over Charleston Southern (1-1) on Friday, Aug. 28 at the Hilton RTP Classic.
Gardner hit .500 and added two block assists and a dig while Sarah Griggs contributed six kills and three service aces. Alex Smith pushed 32 assists and scored four times, and Lindsay Benac recorded 14 digs. Jana Angel (5), Keri DeMar (4) and Lisa Kretchman (3) all contributed scores to the offense.
Gardner was perfect on the attack in the first frame, leading the Pack to a 25-23 decision with 10 kills in as many attempts. The Bucs came out to a quick 1-4 lead, but a kill from Gardner and a Griggs service ace handed NC State its first advantage at 7-6. CSU battled back to knot the score at 12-all, and from that point on both teams exchanged blows and brief leads. An Angel kill broke a 22-22 tie to put the Pack ahead, and a ball handling error courtesy of Cori Holeman extended the lead before Gardner put things to rest with a final blow.
NC State hit just .051 and overcame a slow start to fend off Charleston Southern, 26-24, in the second stanza. The Pack trailed 9-17 before rattling off six consecutive scores, cutting the Bucs lead to two. A Griggs kill later tied play at 21-21, but back-to-back miscues allowed CSU to move its lead back to two points. A Gardner kill on set point extended play, and an Emily Libertowski attack error put the Pack ahead at 25-24 before another Gardner strike sealed the deal.
The third set featured four tied scores and just two lead changes despite the fact that the Wolfpack hit just .146 due to nine attack errors on 41 attempts. NC State took a 23-21 lead late in play on an errant CSU attack and a DeMar kill. The Bucs then called for a timeout and responded by claiming two of the next three points, but a final DeMar kill ended the action at 25-23.
NC State will wrap up tournament play tomorrow, Saturday, Aug. 29, against Campbell (noon) and Davidson (7 p.m.).
