RALEIGH, N.C. - For the third consecutive Friday night, the NC State women’s soccer team will look for a home victory at Dail Soccer Field. The Wolfpack puts its 2-0 record on the line tomorrow against in-state foe Davidson at 7:30 p.m.
The Pack returns to the field after Monday’s 2-0 road win at nearby Campbell. The Camels took a very conservative approach in the first half that limited the visitors scoring opportunities. However, sophomore Tanya Cain was able to break through and score an early goal in the seventh minute to give her club some confidence.
Cain mentioned after the match that, "Steve (Springthorpe) wanted us to get that early goal so we could start to get the rhythm our team needed on the road."
After a couple more close chances, the Pack broke through for a second half marker off a free kick by senior Chantalle Dugas that found the head of freshman Kara Blosser and she deposited the ball into the net for a 2-0 advantage.
Through two matches, NC State hasn’t allowed a goal as keeper Kim Kern has produced a pair of clean sheets. She made two saves in the opener against Old Dominion and one against Campbell.
On the offensive side, five different players have scored one goal. Blosser, Dugas and junior Nadia Aboulhosn each have three points to lead the club, while Cain and classmate Paige Dugal have also found the back of the net. Senior Meredith Parrilla has one assist to her credit for the Pack.
The Dish on Davidson
The Davidson women’s soccer team started the 2009 season off in winning fashion behind a goal and assist from sophomore Stephanie Gerow as the Wildcats scored a 3-1 season-opening road win at Winthrop last Saturday.
The Wildcats improved to 4-2 in season opening wins under the guidance of sixth-year head coach Greg Ashton, and tallied their second win in the all-time series vs. the Eagles.
Beside Gerow’s goal and her first collegiate assist, senior Lauren Conner set up two goals on corner kicks, and Blakely Low and Amanda Flink each netted their first scores of the season.
All-Time Series
NC State holds an 8-1 record in the series with Davidson. In the last meeting, NC State came out on top 5-1 in the 2007 season opener. Lindsay Vera scored a hat trick in the game to lead the Wolfpack.
What’s Next
NC State welcomes one of its own next Thursday when UNLV arrives in Raleigh for a match at Dail Soccer Field at 5 p.m. Former Wolfpack keeper Kat Mertz (1994-97) is now in her fifth season as the head coach for the Rebels.
