RALEIGH, N.C. - The Triangle Sports Commission, a Community Partner of the United States Olympic Committee, announced the selection of four local students as participants in the USOC Finding Leaders Among Minorities Everywhere (F.L.A.M.E.) Program.
Representing NC State is junior, Franklyn Simmons, a member of the Wolfpack Track & Field team. Simmons was also named to the ACC Academic Honor Roll for the second straight year and the Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports Scholar team. The Sports Scholars Award honors undergraduate minority students who best exemplify the highest standards of scholarship, athleticism and humanitarianism. Simmons’ athletic accomplishments during the 2008-09 track & field season consisted of four top-15 finishes.
Celebrating its 16th anniversary, F.L.A.M.E. has provided students an in-depth look at the Olympic Movement and personal exploration of the Olympic Ideals of persistence, commitment, vision, focus and determination. The program focuses on mentoring students so that they can apply Olympic-oriented principles to all aspects of their lives. F.L.A.M.E. also offers a pathway for talented young people to become further involved in the Olympic Movement either through the USOC’s college internship program or other career and volunteer opportunities.
