RALEIGH, N.C. – Senior Chantalle Dugas scored three second half goals to lead NC State to a 7-0 win over VMI in an exhibition women’s soccer match at Dail Soccer Stadium Friday night.
The match was first-year head coach Steve Springthorpe’s inaugural home match since taking over the program in January. Dugas made sure it was a good start to the season by scoring three times in an 18 minute span of the second half.
First she blasted a shot from 20-yards out at 47:49. Just a few minutes later off a free kick she connected from 22 yards out as she took advantage of the unorganized VMI defense after a foul was called on the Keydets.
She rounded out her scoring spree when she one timed a shot off a Tayna Cain feed at the 69:50 mark of the second half.
The scoring parade began in the 20th minute when Cain side stepped two defenders and lofted a shot into the far left corner for an unassisted tally.
Kara Baldy took a nice pass from freshman Kara Blosser about 15 minutes later and deposited her shot into the upper left corner from 15 yards out for a 2-0 lead at the 35:53 mark.
Alex Berger connected on a penalty shot just before half to send the Wolfpack into halftime up 3-0.
Sophomore Paige Dugal added a late goal in the 82nd minute of a long cross from senior defender Gia Cipollini.
NC State opens the regular season next Friday at home against Old Dominion at 7 p.m.
