RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State men’s swimming and diving head coach Brooks Teal announced the addition of accomplished prospect Facundo Monteiro to the program on Friday, Aug. 14. A native of Buenos Aires, Argentina, Monteiro will join the team in time for the upcoming 2009-10 season.
His addition to the program assures the continuation of a storied tradition of top-flight backstroke competitors with the Pack.
“We expect Facundo to step right in and have an immediate impact in the conference and as a leader on our team,” said Teal. “He has the potential to become one of the top backstrokers not only in the conference but in the nation as well.”
Monteiro brings a wealth of both national and international experience to Raleigh. A national champion in the 200-meter backstroke, he also collected a Buenos Aires title in the 100-meter backstroke.
Competing with Club Atletico Independiente, he took first in the 100 backstroke at both the International Austral Cup in Chile and the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Tournament within the past year. Monteiro was also tapped as his club’s swimmer of the year.
Monteiro chose NC State over Kentucky, New Orleans, Texas Christian, Brigham Young and Missouri State, citing the program’s storied history as well as his aspirations to study marketing and business.
NC State men’s and women’s swimming and diving will hold its annual Red & White Scrimmage at Casey Natatorium on campus on Oct. 9, before kicking off its season against both Duke and Maryland on Oct. 24 in College Park, Md.
