Women's Soccer Hosts VMI in Exhibition

NC State's athletic calender officially opens Friday night when the women's soccer team, under first-year head coach Steve Springthorpe, hosts VMI in an exhibition game from the Dail Soccer Stadium on campus at 7 p.m.
This marks the first competition for Springthorpe's squad at home since he took the reigns of the program in January. Just the fourth head coach in school history dating back to 1984, Springthorpe spent the previous five seasons at Fresno State. He compiled a 52-40-12 record and transformed the Bulldog soccer program into a Western Athletic Conference (WAC) title contender that appeared in the league’s championship game four straight years, winning twice, and earning a regular season title in 2006. Fresno State made two appearances in the NCAA Tournament in 2005 and 2008.
Springthorpe has at his disposal a club of 26 players, including 20 returning players from one year ago. Among the bevy of players back, the club has five seniors that have all played significant roles the last three years and will guide a group of 13 freshmen and sophomore.
Springthorpe expects to give significant playing time to all his players Friday night so this should be a great opportunity to see what's in store for the Wolfpack women's soccer program in 2009.
Admission is free and parking is available in the parking deck near Reynolds Coliseum.
