Southern Pines, N.C. – Joanna and Julie Saleeby of Raleigh, N.C., and teammates on the NC State women’s golf team fired a seven-under-par round of 65--132 total to win the 32nd Carolinas Women's Four-Ball Championship at Mid Pines Inn and Golf Club.
The Saleeby sisters earned the win by two strokes over Dawn Woodard of Greer, S.C. and Lea Anne Brown of Mt. Pleasant, S.C. This is the first four-ball championship the Saleeby’s ever played in together.
"We play with each other on the (NC State) golf team but we have never played in an event like this. It was a lot of fun," said Julie. "We played so well together today. When one of us was in trouble the other one would make a birdie."
The Saleeby duo joins Page Marsh and Amber Marsh Elliott as the only other team in the championships history to win as a team of sisters. Ironically, Page Marsh is the women's golf coach at NC State.
"Julie is not only a positive person but she is such a great putter. I always trusted her read on every green and our putts just kept finding the bottom of the cup," said Joanna. "We also hit a lot of shots close today too. It was a good day for us."
In addition, rising seniors Cindel Gwyn (Calabash, N.C.) and Kathleen Strandberg (Greensboro, N.C.) placed ninth with an even-par score of 144 (70-74).
This championship is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association, which is celebrating its 100th year of serving amateur golf in the Carolinas.
