Riggins Turns Up Heat, Makes Northwoods All-Star Team

RALEIGH, N.C. - Already enjoying a strong summer season, Harold Riggins turned it up a notch this past week, fashioning a five-game hitting streak on his way to helping the Madison Mallards to a 6-1 week in the Northwoods League.
On July 9 against Deluth, Riggins went 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI in a 3-1 win. In a two-game set against Alexandria on July 10-11, Riggins went 3-for-6 with two walks and four RBIs, and hit his eighth home run of the season. Riggins again came out swinging on July 12 in a doubleheader against Battle Creek, going 3-for-5 as the Mallards won the opener, 6-1. He closed out the double-dip getting a hit in three at-bats in another 6-1 Madison victory.
Riggins is hitting .329 for the season with 11 doubles, a triple, eight home runs, and a league-leading 40 RBIs in 40 games. He will be appearing in the Northwoods League All-Star Game on Tuesday, July 21 in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada.
Pratt Maynard and Andrew Ciencin - Forest City Owls (Coastal Plain League)
Maynard and Ciencin were a formidable tag team against Thomasville on July 9. Maynard went 3-for-5 with two RBIs, two runs scored, and a stolen base. Ciencin added two hits, an RBI, and two runs scored as the NC State pair led the Owls to a 10-4 victory over the HiToms.
The two were back at it the next night against Asheboro. Maynard singled and drove in two runs and Ciencin also singled in four trips and scored a run in a 5-3 win.
Florence found out a way to keep Maynard hitless on July 11 -- by walking him three times. Maynard finished the day 0-for-1 but used one of his walks to score the deciding run in a 4-3 win over the RedWolves.
On July 14, Ciencin used some power to help the Owls defeat Martinsville 7-1. Ciencin finished 2-for-4, hitting his second home run of the season and driving in two runs in the win.
Maynard is hitting .338 with 13 doubles, four home runs, and 34 RBIs for the Owls. He will be in Wilmington, N.C., on July 21 for the Coastal Plain League All-Star Game.
Ciencin has a .298 average with a double, triple, two home runs, and eight RBIs in 14 games.
Jake Buchanan - Cotuit Kettlers (Cape Cod League)
Buchanan went the distance against Orleans on Tuesday, allowing one earned run on six hits. He struck out eight and did not surrender a walk in the 6-2 Cotuit victory.
With the win, Buchanan improved to 1-1 on the season with a 0.67 ERA in 27 innings. He has struck out 21 and walked five in five appearances.
Cory Mazzoni - Slippery Rock Sliders (Prospect League)
Mazzoni made a brief appearance out of the bullpen for the Sliders against Dubois County on July 9. He allowed one hit and struck out one in his inning of work to help preserve a 4-3 win.
Mazzoni is 2-2 on the year with a 2.78 ERA in 37 2/3 innings. He has struck out 37 and walked 11 in seven starts.
Chris Schaeffer - Green Bay Bullfrogs (Northwoods League)
Schaeffer was a major contributor in last Thursday’s 7-3 win over Rochester. The Wolfpack catcher went 3-for-4 with a walk, three RBIs, and a run scored. He is in the midst of a three-game hitting streak.
Schaeffer is hitting .169 on the year with a home run and 15 RBIs for the Bullfrogs.
Drew Taylor - Cedar Rapids Kernels (Midwest League (A) - Angels)
In his last 10 games, Taylor is 1-0 with a 0.79 ERA in 11 1/3 innings. He has struck out 15 and walked 6 in that stretch and hasn’t allowed a run since June 21 against Clinton.
Aaron Bates - Boston Red Sox (MLB)
Bates went 1-for-1 with an RBI in a 15-9 shootout with the Royals on July 11. The base knock was his first Major League hit.
On July 12, Bates had a big day going 3-for-4 with two doubles, an RBI, and a run scored in a 6-0 shutout of Kansas City.
Since being called up to Boston, Bates is hitting .364 (4-for-11) with two doubles, a walk, and two RBIs.
Jeremy Synan - Greensboro Grasshoppers (South Atlantic League (A) - Marlins)
Synan has been tearing the cover off the ball as of late. He followed up a 2-for-4 night aginst Rome on Tuesday by going 3-for-6 with a double and an RBI against Rome on Wednesday.
In his last 10 games, Synan is hitting .432 (16-for-37) with four doubles, two home runs, five walks, and eight RBIs.
Overall, Synan is batting .285 with 22 doubles, 13 home runs, and 51 RBIs in 82 games for the Grasshoppers.
2009 Wolfpack Draft Class
Righthander Sam Brown has appeared in six games for the Spokane Indians (Mariners), going 0-1 with a 5.06 ERA in 10 2/3 innings. He has struck out 10 and walked five.
Kyle Rutter has been used out of the bullpen in his first four professional games for the Lowell Spinners (Red Sox). In five innings, Rutter is 0-0 with a 1.80 ERA, striking out six and walking four. Opponents are hitting .176 against him.
John Lambert was drafted by the Cubs in the 33rd round and has yet to sign. He is currently pitching in the California Collegiate League for the Santa Barbara Foresters where he is 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA in four appearances out of the bullpen. Lambert has struck out nine and walked five in five innings.
Wolfpack standount Jimmy Gillheeney was taken in the eighth around by the Mariners and has not signed. He is not on an active roster in any summer leagues.
