RALEIGH, N.C. One of the most anticipated projects in the recent development of NC State’s Centennial Campus, the Lonnie Poole Golf Course, will open in the coming weeks to Charter Partners and will be open to the general public by mid-July.
The par-71, 7,358-yard course was designed by the Arnold Palmer Design Group on 200 pristine acres in the southeast corner of Centennial Campus. The course is named for Waste Industries Inc. founder and chairman Lonnie Poole, a 1959 NC State graduate.
With its structured mixes of native grasses, uncut bunkers and unprecedented vistas that show off the NC State campus and downtown Raleigh, the course will quickly become one of the most popular places on campus for alumni, students, faculty, staff and the general public. Rates are competitive with other public courses in the area.
Carolinas Golf Group, which will manage the course, recently released the official scorecard and the greens fees.
Chip Watson, the course’s general manager and an assistant coach for the NC State men’s golf team, said he would open the driving range and first nine holes to Charter Partners as soon as the work on the temporary clubhouse is done. The second nine holes will open shortly thereafter.
After the Charter Partner preview period, the course will be open to the general public, Watson said.
The course will be home to the NC State men’s and women’s varsity golf teams, as well as the NC State Professional Golf Management program and the school’s top-ranked turfgrass program.
The course will have a distinct Wolfpack flavor, from its four-wolf logo, to the names of several figures prominent in Wolfpack athletics. The 18th hole is named for former Wolfpack quarterback Roman Gabriel, whose No. 18 jersey was retired at the end of his career. The 17th hole is named for former Wolfpack Club executive secretary K.M. “Charlie” Bryant and the 10th hole is named in honor of the Wolfpack Club.
A limited number of Charter Partnerships are now available. For more information, call Becky Bumgardner in University Development at (919) 513-4412.
