RALEIGH, N.C. After finishing the 2008 season winning eight of the final 11 games on the season, the NC State men’s soccer team parlayed that success into the classroom once the season ended. According to the latest APR results, the Wolfpack finished second in the ACC with a score of 985, behind only Duke. The national average for men’s soccer was 958 for the 2004-08 cohort.
Four different Pack members posted a perfect 4.0 GPA during the spring semester; Bryan Booth, Joe Delpapa, Zane Tharakan, and Chris Zuerner.
Many members of the Pack also performed well in the classroom, as the men’s soccer team had 15 members reach at least a 3.0 in the spring, with nine of those over a 3.5. A total of eight players currently carry a GPA of 3.7 or better over their entire Wolfpack careers.
A total of five members of the 2008 team earned their degrees this past year, including two players who will be back for the 2009 season. Redshirt seniors Ronnie Bouemboue (business) and Christopher Widman (economics) both graduated in three and a half years when they earned their undergraduate degrees in December. Graduating just a couple of weeks ago, Stanley Mathurin, Clint Pires and Daniel Shields were all seniors this past season. Former goalkeeper Tom DeStefano (2006-07) also came back and received his degree in December.
The Pack also had five members on the 2008 All-ACC Academic team, the third most in the conference only behind Clemson and Duke. Bouemboue and Widman were members of that squad along with Kris Byrd, Federico Nachmann and Chris Zuerner. Nachmann is currently in NC State’s graduate program for parks, recreation and tourism.
NC State returns all 11 starters from last season, and will begin its 2009 season on September 1 against Winthrop.
