Men's Golf Opens NCAA Regional Play on Thursday

RALEIGH, N.C. The NC State men’s golf team will look to qualify for the NCAA Championships this weekend, as the Pack heads to Bowling Green, Ky., to compete in the 2009 Central NCAA Regional Championships at the Club at Olde Stone. The top-five teams this weekend, along with the top individual not on those squads, will advance to the NCAA Championships May 27-30 at Toledo, Ohio.
The Wolfpack enters this weekend’s competition as the No. 3 seed, and will be one of three ACC schools in this regional (Georgia Tech and Duke).
This weekend's course is a Par 72 with a 7,400-yard layout. The teams will play a total of 54 rounds over the weekend, with a round of 18 holes each day. The field consists of 14 seeded teams, along with five individuals, to make the tournament a 75-man field.
The NC State men’s golf program will be making its 17th trip, and the 10th in the last 12 years, to the NCAA Regionals, all under the direction of coach Richard Sykes.
NC State will be sending senior Darren Blair and Andrew Byrd, junior Brad Revell, and sophomores Brandon Detweiler and Matt Hill.
The Wolfpack is currently ranked No. 23 in the latest Golfweek performance index, while Golfstat has the Pack No. 15.
The Wolfpack will tee off in the first round on Thursday at 8:30 a.m. and is grouped with Washington and Georgia Tech, the top three seeds of the regional. The times and pairings for Friday’s and Saturday’s rounds will be set after completion of each round.
