Deja Vu as Softball Sweeps Charlotte in 10th
4/7/2009 12:00:00 AM | Softball
RALEIGH, N.C. It took 10 innings and nearly three hours, but NC State got the exact same result on the exact same play as the first game, sweeping a doubleheader at the Curtis & Jacqueline Dail Softball Stadium with a 3-2 victory over Charlotte on Tuesday, April 7.
State now stands at 20-16, while the 49ers move to 21-10
Five Wolfpack players Alyssa Ishibashi, Alyssa Allbritten, Claudia Cooper, Lauren Peters and Eliza Jacobellis had two hits apiece. Mendy McKenzie (8-7) got the win, allowing four hits and fanning six while tossing the final seven innings. Morgan Peeler pitched the first three innings.
Katy Hackett (5-3) was hit with the complete-game loss.
Three hits put State up quickly, 1-0, in the bottom of the first. Ishibashi led off with a double, moving to third when Allbritten lined a base hit into left. Cooper then brought Ishibashi across the plate with a single into left.
A pair of two-out singles from Sarah Malene and Kendra McCall put the 49ers up, 2-1, in the top half of the second.
State took advantage of a bases loaded situation to knot the score at 2-all in the bottom of the sixth. Bethaney Wells drew a free pass, Peters plopped a base hit just behind first base and Jacobellis dropped a beautiful bunt to load the bags. Ishibashi followed with a sac-fly to center, scoring Wells and bringing the score to 2-2.
The last inning was nearly identical to the final inning in the preceding game eventually ending on the exact same play. Wells began the bottom of the 10th with an infield single to short. Peters then dropped a bunt single towards third, and Wells moved to third when Keri Palma’s late throw to first landed in right field. Jacobellis followed up with a grounder to second, which Malene booted, allowing the winning run to cross the plate.
NC State will now head to Atlanta, Ga., for a three-game ACC set at Georgia Tech. The Pack and Yellow Jackets will play two games on Friday, April 10, beginning at 5 p.m., before wrapping up the action on Saturday, April 11, at 1 p.m. GoPack.com will carry live stats for the entire series, while the third and final game will be broadcast live online via ACC Select.
