Senior third baseman Drew Martin blogs about his experiences with the NC State baseball team.
Coming off a win on Wednesday night against the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, we are getting ready to take on Duke University on Easter weekend. With it being Easter weekend there is no school and no internship on Friday, which means IO get the rare opportunity to sleep in. I’m not going to lie: due to my class schedule, internship, and baseball I haven’t been able to sleep in that much and when I get a chance I take advantage of my opportunity.
Friday, April 10,after waking up around 11 a.m. (call me lazy but it felt really good) I ate a little brunch and just hung out around my apartment. I know this is supposedly a road trip for us this weekend but with Duke being so close we did not stay in a hotel. Better yet, we stayed in the comfort of our own beds. We had to be at the field for lunch around 3 p.m. I chose to go get a little extra hitting in before lunch along with a couple of the guys. We took batting practice on the field and by the time we got done it was time for lunch. After lunch we packed our things, got dressed, and headed over to Duke for our game at 6:30 p.m. The game was cancelled due to rain and lightning. It did not look very good at all over there.
Saturday, April 11, we played a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. We are used to playing doubleheaders it feels like we don’t even play on Fridays anymore because we get rained out so often. We all joke around with Jimmy Gillheeney that he is no longer our Friday night starter; he is our game one starter on Saturdays. If I am correct I believe this is our sixth doubleheader of the season and in my four years of being here with haven’t come close to that many doubleheaders. The first game we played pretty well and ended up winning but the second outcome did not end up in our favor.
Sunday, April 12, we had our normal church service for the guys that would like to join. We do it every Sunday morning before breakfast. After that we ate breakfast, sat around and played some cards and prepared ourselves for the game that day. It was Easter and a good day for me because my aunt and uncle came up with my two cousins to watch me play. We call my aunt “Tootie” she is awesome and I just have to add that she is a little enthusiastic when she watches me play. If you don’t believe me then either ask me when the next game she will be attending is and watch her in action or ask the people at Duke University who won the “Fan Fanatic” award. This award goes to the craziest fan at the game. Yes, she won it and she was in all N.C. State gear. Who wins the award at an opposing teams field? I know my little cousin Nick was sitting beside her ready to crawl under a rock but I love her to death. I believe that my aunt Tootie is deserving of the award that I normally grant one of my teammates for the weekend. The outcome was not what we would have asked for but we will have to go get whoever we play this coming week.
