NEW LONDON, N.C. Sophomore Matt Hill became only the sixth golfer in NC State history to finish first at the ACC Championships, as Hill tied with Clemson’s David May for co-medalist honors this weekend. Hill and May both finished at 10-under (206), two strokes ahead of a pair of Georgia Tech golfers at the Old North State Club in New London, N.C.
Hill becomes the first Pack golfer to win the ACC Championship since Hank Kim did so in 1995, and only the sixth NC State golfer all-time to win the conference crown.
Hill has now claimed six career victories in his first 21 tournaments of his NC State career, and has five this school year. Hill has brought home medalist honors in four of the last five tournaments for the Pack dating back to early March.
His first victory came at last year’s Hootie at Bulls Bay, and Hill also claimed top honors at the Hawks Invitational this past fall and in back-to-back tournaments in March, first at the General Hackler Tournament then the Schenkel E-Z-Go. Most recently, Hill won the Pack’s River Landing Intercollegiate.
Hill now extends his own school record, as he is the only golfer in Wolfpack history to win five tournaments in one school year. Hill’s six career titles are also now the most for any Wolfpack golfer of all-time, topping current PGA Tour member Tim Clark's previous record of five.
"I figured the scores would be lower," said Hill. "Thank goodness the weather held off. I had some good par puts today and think that this will definitely motivate us for next year. I absolutely love this course and can't wait to be back here next year."
In third round action, Hill shot a two-under (70) on the day. His round featured three birdies, and he was at three-under on the front-nine.
Hill shot a four-under (68) in both the first and second round this weekend, and only had two holes out of 54 played over the weekend over par.
The Wolfpack as a team finished in a tie for fourth place. No. 18 NC State finished the three rounds at one-over (865), tying with No. 27 Wake Forest. In third round action on Sunday, the Pack shot a five-over (293).
No. 9 Georgia Tech took top team honors, as the Yellow Jackets finished at 18-under (846) and won by three strokes. No. 3 Clemson finished in second at 15-under (849), while No. 39 Duke placed third at three-under (861).
Junior Brad Revell also secured a top-20 finish for the Pack, as he tied for 20th place after finishing at two-over (218). Revell made a five shot improvement from yesterday’s second round, as he shot a one-under (71) on Sunday, matching his round one score. Revell had a team high six birdies on the day, with five coming on the back-nine including birdies on the final two holes. Revell carded a two-under on his final nine holes of the tournament.
Sophomore Brandon Detweiler came into the final round at even-par, but shot a five-over (77) in third round action and finished the tournament at five-over (221) all together.
Senior Andrew Byrd finished up at nine-over (225) while classmate Darren Blair carded a 10-over (226).
Byrd shot a five-over (77) in third round action, with one birdie and he was at one-under on the front-nine. Blair also shot a one-under on the front-nine in third round action, and finished at three-over (75) on the day. Blair holed four birdies on the day.
NC State will be back in action next weekend, traveling to Charlottesville, Va., and competing in the Cavalier Classic. The Pack will then await word on what region NC State will be sent to for the NCAA Regional Championships the weekend of May 14-16.
