
Women's Golf Up To 3rd at ACC Championship

GREENSBORO, N.C. NC State moved up one spot to third in the team standings on Saturday and has three players in the top-seven individually after two rounds of the ACC Women’s Golf Championship held at Sedgefield Country Club.
The 35th-ranked Wolfpack shot the second-lowest round today with a 298 (+14) at the par 71, 6,355-layout. Wake Forest (598, +14) has a commanding 14 shot lead over Duke (599, +31). The Wolfpack is one shot behind the Blue Devils at 600 (+32).
Senior Lauren Doughtie fired the third best round of the day with an even-par 71 and is in sixth place through 36 holes at +3 (74-71=145). The Suffolk, Va., native got off to a great start in the morning with birdies at No. 1 and 4 and then followed that up with an eagle at the par-5 fifth hole and was -3 through five. She gave back two strokes over the next two holes, but birdied the ninth to make the turn at -2.
A tough back nine saw Doughtie post three bogeys, but rallied with a birdie at the home hole to finish at even par and is in great position for the best finish by a Wolfpacker in this event since Nancy Mountcastle placed third in 2006.
Juniors Emily Street and Kathleen Strandberg shot identical two-over-par rounds of 73 and are tied for seventh overall (148, +6).
Street had a very steady day by shooting one-over on each set of nine holes, including birdies at holes six and No. 12. The Forest City, N.C., native has a chance to be NC State’s top finisher at the ACC Championship for the third straight season.
Meanwhile, Strandberg, the local from Greensboro tied her career-low collegiate round with the aforementioned 73. After posting par the first six holes, Strandberg doubled the seventh, but rallied for a birdie at No. 9. On the back nine she birdied No. 18 to finish arguably her best round with NC State on a high note.
Redshirt junior Joanna Saleeby improved by five shots from yesterday with an 81 on Saturday and is 36th overall in the field at +25 (86-81=167).
Freshman Meghan Chapman withdrew from the second round and did not post a completed 18-hole score.
A day after setting an new women’s course record with a 66, Wake Forest’s Natalie Sheary remains in the lead at -2 (140), followed by Duke’s Amanda Blumeherst (141) and Jennie Lee (142).
Going into Sunday’s final round just one shot out of second, NC State has positioned itself to record the program’s best ever finish at the ACC Championship. The Wolfpack was third in 2002 and tied for third in 2005.
