NEW LONDON, N.C. NC State sophomore Matt Hill will go into tomorrow’s final round at the 2009 ACC Championships with a chance to bring home individual medalist honors. Hill is currently tied with Georgia Tech’s Cameron Tringale atop the leaderboard, as both golfers are eight-under (136) through the first two rounds at the Old North State Club in New London, N.C.
As a team, the Pack fell into a third place tie. No. 18 NC State currently stands at four-under (572) after two rounds, and is tied with No. 27 Wake Forest seven strokes off the lead. No. 9 Georgia Tech leads the field at 11-under (565), while No. 3 Clemson is at six-under (570).
The Pack’s Hill is looking to become the first Pack golfer to win the ACC Championship since Hank Kim did so in 1995, and only the sixth NC State golfer all-time to win the conference crown.
In Saturday’s second round, Hill matched his first round score with a four-under (68). Hill had a bogey on No. 17 today, his only hole above par through the first 36 holes, but birdied No. 18 to tie for the individual lead. He had a total of five birdies on the round.
Sophomore Brandon Detweiler is currently in 13th place overall, as he has shot an even-par (144) through the first two rounds. In the second round on Saturday, Detweiler had a pair of birdies, and was fired a one-under on the back-nine with no holes over par.
Junior Brad Revell has shot a three-over (147) after two rounds, while senior Andrew Byrd is at four-over (148). In second round action, Revell had three birdies with two on the final three holes, while Byrd holed a pair of birdies and shot even-par on the back-nine.
Senior Darren Blair had the Pack’s biggest improvement from the first round, as he was five strokes better on Saturday. After no recording any birdies in the first round, Blair holed five in the second round, and had a one-under on the front-nine. For the two rounds, Blair is at seven-over (151).
