A Watery Trip to Boston (4/10/09)

Drew Martin is a senior third baseman on the NC State baseball team.
On Thursday, April 2, we left for Boston to play Boston College in a three-game baseball series, with the first game slated for 2:30 p.m. Friday. Of course, that was all base on the weather.
It seems everywhere we go rain, cold and win follow us around. And the trip up north was no different.
When we got to Boston College’s campus, we were told to practice on the football field, because rain was expected in the area. We took a few ground balls and hit in the batting cages. Afterwards, we went back to the hotel and had a little free time for ourselves.
I know I normally wait until the end to reveal the most ridiculous thing that happened on the road that weekend but Thursday at the airport I decided that this was well worthy of being the winner and if we had two winners on the weekend that would be just as well.
The winner this weekend was Dallas Poulk, the preseason All-American. We were sitting in the airport waiting on our plane to board. Normally, everyone just sits around listening to music, eats or messes around on his computer. Devon Cartwright was watching the movie “Seven Pounds,” an excellent, but (not to spoil the ending) heart-wrenching movie.
Zak Sinclair mentioned that it was a movie that could make you cry. Andrew Ciencin then proceeded to tell us that he would cry if he watched that movie. Dallas then asked Andrew if he was a “crier” during sad movies and Ciencin said “Yes, I am. I am not ashamed to admit it.”
Obviously, we all got a good laugh out of that but Dallas decides to say “I bet no one can guess what the only movie I have ever cried in and this is the truth.” We all give our guesses of what we think it might be and let’s just say no one was even close.
Dallas then tells us that the only movie he has ever cried in was “Waterboy”... Yes, my friends, you read that right “WATERBOY!"...Dallas might be the only person in history to cry at an Adam Sandler movie. Or at least the only person to admit to it in front of his teammates.
Well, that was the winner so far on the weekend and we hadn’t even arrived in Boston yet.
On Friday, we woke up for breakfast and we tried to get ready for our 2:30 p.m. start. The reason we play during the day all weekend in Boston is because they do not have lights. We wake up to a chilly rainfall, something we have been used to all season long.
The game, of course, is cancelled because of the weather, with a double-header scheduled for Saturday at 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. So we go practice at an indoor facility to stay sharp.
We get back to the hotel around 4 p.m. and I decided to get a little homework done before I went with a couple of the guys to downtown Boston to get dinner. Sometimes doing homework on the road can be a little frustrating because of the internet availability or lack thereof. Also, it’s hard to sit in the room all day doing work when you’re in a cool city like Boston, with all of its history and entertainment options. But we have to get it done one way or the other. We head downtown to eat and just see what it is like but we had to be back by 9 p.m. for a team meeting to talk about the plan for tomorrow.
Saturday, we had our games and let’s just say the weather was not the best but at least we got the games in. After the game we had time to go eat and do whatever we wanted. A couple of us went to get food and to watch the Final Four games.
Sunday, the game was at 1:30 p.m. and we had our flight at around 7:30 p.m.. That’s all I’m going to say about Sunday. Overall, the weekend could have turned out a little better for us but we will just have to work to get better everyday and hopefully thing’s will work out in our favor.
