RALEIGH, N.C. NC State football coach Tom O’Brien was pleased with the performance of his two quarterbacks in Saturday afternoon’s controlled scrimmage, the second of spring practice for the Wolfpack.
Sophomore Russell Wilson completed nine of his 11 passes before leaving midway through the scrimmage to join the Wolfpack baseball team for its trip to Durham Saturday afternoon to play Duke.
Redshirt freshman Mike Glennon got the bulk of the remaining snaps under center, completing 16 of his 19 passes for 133 yards and a touchdown. Junior walk-on quarterback Daniel Imhoff completed one of five passes for two yards.
Senior Toney Baker led the running backs with eight carries for 19 yards, followed by freshman James Washington with eight carries for 15 yards. Baker was also the team’s leading receiver, catching six passes for 68 yards. Receiver Jay Smith had four receptions for 37 yards.
Placekicker Josh Czajkowski kicked three field goals, hitting from 52, 43 and 23 yards.
The two-hour scrimmage at Carter-Finley Stadium consisted of approximately 90 plays, with the offenses working backed up against the end zone, at midfield and in the red zone.
“We made progress from the first scrimmage,” O’Brien said. “We still have a long way to go, especially up front. The defensive line is ahead of the offensive guys. We still have to keep working on the offensive line. We have to get them a lot better. We are still concerned with the secondary and the safety position.
“Everybody still has to get better, but those are the areas we have to improve the most.”
O’Brien announced that three players would not participate in the remainder of spring practice. Defensive back D’Andre Morgan suffered a hamstring injury, offensive lineman Julian Williams suffered a knee injury and redshirt freshman Akeem Cunningham of East Orange, N.J., has opted to transfer to another school.
The Wolfpack’s spring practice will conclude with the alumni weekend and next Saturday’s Kay Yow Spring Football Game, which begins at 1 p.m. at Carter-Finley. Click here for more information about the spring game.
