RALEIGH, N.C. - The NC State Gymnastics team travels to Baton Rouge, La. this weekend for its final road contest of the season. The Wolfpack will face the host LSU Tigers on Saturday, March 7. The Tigers are ranked No. 11 nationally, while the Pack is No. 37 in the latest NCAA Regional Qualifying Scores (RQS) rankings.
NC State currently has an RQS of 194.070, good for fifth in the conference. The Pack could jump up in RQS with a solid road score against the Tigers.
The team is currently relying on a unique mix of freshmen and veterans to fill its event lineup.
One of those freshmen standouts is Brooke Barr, who leads the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) in vault and ranks 15th nationally on the event. Barr has scored a 9.9 in three of the last four meets on vault.
Barr was named EAGL Rookie of the Week this last week for the fifth time this season, out of eight possible weeks the award has been given.
Barr also ranks fifth in the conference on floor.
Junior Taylor Seaman is the only gymnast in EAGL to be ranked in the top-8 of the RQS in each of the four individual events and the all-around. Seaman ranks 17th on floor nationally and leads the conference in the event. She is also fourth on bars, fourth on the all-around, fifth on vault and eighth on beam in EAGL.
Senior Ashley Shepard is sixth in EAGL on the floor exercise. The floor specialist has scored a 9.850 on the event in the last two meets, and over 9.8 in five of the meets this season.
Sophomore Brittney Hardiman has been her usual consistent self in the all-around, ranking sixth in EAGL. She is also seventh on vault in the conference.
Sophomore Brittany Vontz won bars last week at TWU with a score 9.750, the sixth time she has scored a 9.750 or higher on bars this season.
Freshman Jess Panza has also helped solidify the lineup on vault and beam, and she scored a 9.850 last week on beam to win the event. She has also posted a 9.775 in all five of the meets she has competed on vault in.
Another freshman, Becca Teich, has also produced consistently on vault, and posted her first top-3 finish against TWU with a 9.8. Teich has scored a 9.7 or higher in the last seven meets, including a career-high 9.8 in the last two meets.
NC State will host George Washington in its last regular-season home meet of the season at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 13. In addition, NC State will host the EAGL Championships (March 21) and the NCAA Southeast Regionals (April 4).
