RALEIGH, N.C. In conjunction with this weekend’s Raleigh Regional in the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament, N.C. State is hosting an afternoon-long Athletic Leadership Symposium at Vaughn Towers on Monday.
The symposium, coordinated by NC State assistant athletics director for game-day operations Shannon Yates and graduate assistant Brandon Stokes, is designed for students pursuing careers in athletics administration, but it is also open to the public.
Cost for the event which included a networking dinner and tickets to see Monday night’s Raleigh Regional Championship game at the RBC Center is $39 for all.
A variety of athletics administrators from around the area will serve as featured speakers at the event, including NC State athletics director Lee Fowler and Wolfpack Club executive director Bobby Purcell.
“Last year, the Greensboro Regional organizing committee hosted a similar event, for young people who wanted to get involved with athletics administration,” said Yates, who received her masters degree from the NC State PRT department. “We thought it was a great idea and wanted to use speakers who we know and have worked with before to provide that same opportunity here.
“We think the topics that we have included are very timely for the current economy.”
The topics and leaders are:
- “The Eight-point crowd management and event planning model,” led by Larry Perkins, assistant general manager of the RBC Center.
- “Career pathways in athletics administration,” led by Ingrid Wicker-McCree, athletics director at North Carolina Central University.
- “Corporate sponsorships and intercollegiate athletics,” led by Jerry Reckard of ISP Collegiate Services.
- “Fundraising in a struggling economy,” led by Bobby Purcell, executive director of the Wolfpack Club.
- “Climbing the athletics leadership ladder,” led by Rita Wiggs, commissioner of the USA South Atlantic Conference.
- “The persistent growth and success of women’s college basketball,” led by ACC associate commissioner for women’s basketball Nora Lynn Finch.
Anyone interested in participating can call or e-mail Brandon Stokes at (919) 513-4533 or gameops_ga@ncsu.edu by midnight Saturday. Registration fees will be collected Monday. For more details, see the attached flyer.
Same-day registration begins at 12:30 p.m. Monday, followed by Fowler’s welcome at 1:15. The symposium runs from 1:30-4:45, followed by a networking dinner at 5 p.m. Tip-off for the regional championship game is slated for 7 p.m. at the RBC Center.
“Even though it is designed for students, I think the symposium is a great opportunity for the public to have a chance to talk face-to-face with leaders in athletic administration,” Yates said. “Each session will have a presentation and a question and answer period. We think we have a wide variety of speakers and topics that are very timely in terms of what we are going through with the economy.”
