RALEIGH, N.C. -- Curran Redal and Trey Wimmer had four hits apiece and three Liberty relievers combined to allow one run on four hits over the final final 6 1/3 innings Wednesday to lead the Flames to a 17-5 victory over NC State at Doak Field at Dail Park.
The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Wolfpack, which dropped to 13-11. Liberty improved to 16-5 with the victory. Mark Swanson, who is normally Liberty’s Friday starter for weekend series, picked up the win to improve to 3-0. He worked 2 1/3 scoreless innings on one hit. He walked two and struck out three. NC State starter Cory Mazzoni (0-3) retired just one of the eight men he faced and was charged with five runs on five hits.
Before the first out of the game was recorded, Liberty had four runs on the scoreboard. Mazzoni hit leadoff batter Matt Williams to start the first inning. Redal doubled down the left-field line to score Williams all the way from first to give the Flames an early 1-0 lead. Doug Bream brought Redal in with a single to center, and Jeff Jefferson kept the hit parade alive in a noisy way, lofting a two-run home run to left to make it 4-0. Tyler Bream walked with one out and scored on a Trey Wimmer RBI-double to make it 5-0 and end Mazzoni’s afternoon. Kyle Rutter got the final two outs to end the inning with no further damage.
The Wolfpack got one back in the bottom half of the first. Drew Martin led off with a single, and after two-out base hit by Drew Poulk, Martin scored when Pratt Maynard singled to right to get NC State on the board, trailing 5-1.
With a steady light rain settling in, the Pack continued to chip away at the Liberty lead in the second. Dallas Poulk started the inning with a walk. After Martin walked and Wade Moore singled to load the bases with two outs, John Gianis walked to force in a run and cut the lead to three at 5-2.
NC State continued to get back into the game in the bottom of the third. Devon Cartwright and Drew Poulk drew one-out walks to start the rally. Pinch-hitter Kyle Wilson’s one-out single drove in Cartwright for the third Wolfpack run. Poulk came in to score when pitcher Andrew Wilson threw the ball into center-field in an attempt to catch Kyle Wilson stealing. That made it 5-4.
After the five-run first inning, Liberty’s bats cooled off until the top of the fourth. Jeff Jefferson laced a two-out single up the middle and later came in to score when Tyler Bream singled to left to extend the lead, 6-3.
The Flames put together a four-run inning in the sixth. After singles by Jefferson and Errol Hollinger to begin the inning, Tyler Bream brought both runners home with a double into the left-field gap. Trey Wimmer added a single to drive in Bream, and later scored to spot Liberty a 10-4 lead.
Wade Moore led off the sixth inning for the Wolfpack with a long triple straightaway to center and scored on a groundout by John Gianis to close the lead to 10-5.
Liberty pieced together two more runs in the seventh. With two outs and Doug Bream on second base after reaching on an error, Tyler Bream brought his cousin home with a double to the right-field gap. Trey Wimmer put Liberty up 12-5 with a single to center.
The wheels came off completely for NC State in the top of the ninth. Hollinger led off, doubled to right and went to third on a wild pitch. Tyler Bream walked, and Wimmer’s one-out single to left scored Hollinger to make it 13-5. P.J. Jiminez walked to load the bases and Williams walked to force in a run and extend the lead to 14-5. Redal’s sacrifice fly to left made it 15-5, and Doug Bream capped the scoring with a two-run double to right-center.
NC State will return to action this weekend with a three-game Atlantic Coast Conference series vs. Virginia Tech. Game times are 6:30 p.m. on Friday, 2 p.m. on Saturday, and 1:30 p.m. on Sunday. All three games will be broadcast live on WKNC-FM (88.1) and on-line on gopack.com through the Pack Pass package.
