RALEIGH, N.C. - Senior gymnast Ashley Shepard was named EAGL Scholar-Athlete of the Year by a vote of the eight league coaches as announced at the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) year-end banquet Friday night.
In addition, six Wolfpack gymnasts combined to earn 14 first-team and second-team All-EAGL selections, including 10 first-team honors.
Shepard was named to the EAGL All-Academic team for a fourth time in addition to earning the EAGL Scholar- Athlete Award. She has carried a perfect 4.0 throughout her career and leads all EAGL gymnasts in GPA. Shepard is also a standout on the floor, earning second-team All-EAGL honors in 2009 to go along with a first-team nod in 2007 and another second-team selection in 2006.
Shepard joins Marlyn Madey as the only NC State winners of the award, as Madey won in 2004.
Junior Taylor Seaman (Greensburg, Pa.) led the way in the All-EAGL voting, earning first-team honors on all four individual events and the all-around, the only conference gymnast to earn that distinction. This marks the second-time in her three-year career that she was named first-team on floor, bars and the all-around. Seaman was also named second-team on the vault and the all-around in 2008. Seaman led EAGL on floor - ranking 20th in the NCAA - was second on the all-around, fourth on both vault and bars and seventh on beam.
Freshman Brooke Barr (Harrisburg, Pa.) was first-team on floor and vault in her debut season, as she led EAGL with five Rookie of the Week selections. She also led the conference on the vault, ranking 16th nationally.
Sophomore Brittney Hardiman (Apopka, Fla.) - the 2008 EAGL Rookie of the Year - was first-team on the vault and all-around for the second straight season. Hardiman was also named second-team on beam for the second-straight season.
Freshman Jess Panza (New York, N.Y.) earned first-team All-EAGL honors on beam and was second-team on vault.
Sophomore Brittany Vontz (Lincoln, Neb.) was All-EAGL second-team on bars for the second-straight season.
Gymnasts with the top eight Regional Qualifying Scores or top six Season Average Scores in each event and the all-around (as listed in Troester on March 16, 2009) receive first-team All-EAGL honors. Second-team honors are voted on by the leagues' head coaches.
NC State will look to earn its fourth EAGL championship on Saturday at 3pm in Reynolds Coliseum. For more information on the meet and for ticket information, click HERE.
