Caldwell Advances to Wrestling Quarterfinals

Junior 149-pounder Darrion Caldwell won his second-round match at the NCAA Wrestling Championships on Thursday evening, taking a 10-2 major decision from Buffalo freshman Desmond Green. The win lifts Caldwell to 35-1 this season and moves him into a quarterfinal bout on Friday vs. Purdue’s Jake Patacsil. The winner automatically will qualify as All-American.
Senior 141-pounder Joe Caramanica, meanwhile, dropped his second-round bout to eighth-seeded Ryan Williams of Old Dominion, 10-5. Caramanica fell to 11-9 and will return to action Friday in the wrestleback bracket.
Sophomore 133-pounder Darrius Little caught a bad break Thursday when third-seeded James Kennedy of Illinois went down in the opening round. Little drew Kennedy in the wrestlebacks and lost 8-3. Little finished his season at 17-17.
Senior 157-pounder Kody Hamrah fell behind Michigan’s Aaron Hynes 12-4, rallied to cut the lead to two points at 12-10, but loss a wild one, 14-12. Hamrah ended his season at 31-9.
