RALEIGH, N.C. - Four student-athletes from the NC State volleyball program have been selected to attend the U.S. National Team tryouts. Isis Garnder, Margaret Salata, Alex Smith and Kelly Wood will all head to Colorado Springs, Colo. for the tryouts at the U.S. Olympic Training Center, Feb. 20-22.
"This is a tremendous honor and a great opportunity for these student-athletes," said head Wolfpack volleyball coach Charita J. Stubbs. "USA Volleyball is a proud and storied organization, and it will be an asset to all of these student-athletes, both personally and athletically, to compete with top-level talent for a chance to play on the U.S. National Team."
Smith, a sophomore, has served as the Pack's No. 1 setter since arriving on campus prior to the 2007 season. In her two years in Raleigh she owns 1,847 assists, 482 digs, 230 kills, 105 total blocks and 31 service aces.
Gardner, Salata and Wood, all freshmen this past season, each enjoyed heavy playing time during their rookie campaigns. Gardner, an outside hitter, was third on the team in kills with 171 while also compiling 39 total blocks. Salata, a middle blocker, was tied for second on the roster in games played at 123. She also recorded 160 kills and 86 blocks. Wood stood as the team's top libero for the vast majority of the year, leading the squad in digs with 486.
Approximately 160 student-athletes will descend upon Colorado Springs to compete for roster spots. Those not chosen to participate with the national team may be considered for other programs run by USA Volleyball.
