RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State broke out the offense for the second straight game and got effective pitching from six pitchers to overtake High Point 8-2 on a Tuesday afternoon matinee at Doak Field at Dail Park. The Wolfpack improved to an even 2-2 on the season. High Point fell to 2-2.
The Wolfpack’s bats came alive during a five-run fourth inning. Following a run-scoring single by Harold Riggins to tie the game at 1-1, the Wolfpack took the lead on two-run singles by Drew Martin and Kyle Wilson against High Point starter Mike Caldwell. NC State added an insurance run in the fifth and two more runs in the sixth to lead 8-2.
NC State freshman Zak Sinclair started for the Wolfpack, allowing five hits and one earned run in 3 1/3 innings, but did not figure in the decision. Jake Kensmoe, who entered the game with one down in the fourth inning, got the victory, his first career win, to improve to 1-0.
High Point jumped on the board first in the fourth inning on a Kyle Mahoney single. With the bases loaded and one away in the inning, Kensmoe came in for Sinclair, and after allowing a sacrifice fly to Rob Gilles, he got out of the inning by inducing Pablo Rasario to ground out to second base, holding the Panthers to two runs in the inning.
Freshman Pratt Maynard singled to start the Wolfpack half of the fourth, took second on a wild pitch and went to third when the throw went into center field for an error, and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Riggins, who finished with two RBIs on the day.
Devon Cartwright bunted Riggins to second and beat out the sacrifice attempt for a single. Pat Ferguson singled up the middle to load the bases, and Drew Martin singled through the left side to drive in two runs and give the Wolfpack the lead at 3-1. Two batters later, Kyle Wilson laced a single up the middle to drive in two more and make it a five-run inning.
Riggins made it 6-2 with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth, and the Pack pieced together another rally in the sixth. Pat Ferguson walked and Drew Martin was hit with a pitch to put runners on first and second with none out. High Point pitcher Masaki Muroya booted Brian Bello’s sacrifice attempt for an error that loaded the bases. Ferguson came around to score on a force play off the bat of Kyle Wilson and Martin touched home when Drew Poulk reached on an error by High Point third baseman Eric Marion. Wilson finished with three RBIs.
After Kensmoe, Jason Zinser, Kyle Rutter, John Lambert and Vance Williams combined to pitch four shutout innings, holding the Panthers to just three hits.
The Wolfpack will travel to Elon for an afternoon game on Wednesday at 4 p.m. and will return home to Doak Field at Dail Park on Friday for a three-game weekend series against Hofstra, beginning Friday at 3 p.m. All will be broadcast on WKNC-FM (88.1) and on-line at gopack.com through the Pack Pass package.
