Shaw Tabbed Assoc. Head Women's Soccer Coach

RALEIGH, N.C. NC State head women’s soccer coach Steve Springthorpe announced Tuesday the hiring of Chris Shaw as associate head coach.
Shaw follows Springthorpe from Fresno State, where the two worked together the past two seasons, leading the Bulldogs to the NCAA Tournament in 2008 and a spot in the Western Athletic Conference title game in back-to-back years.
“I am excited that Chris is joining the Wolfpack family,” said Springthorpe. “As my lead assistant at Fresno State Chris was instrumental in the success of our team the last two years and I know that he will help the team here at NC State reach a new and higher level of play. I look forward to many years of coaching together on the sideline.”
As an assistant coach at Fresno State, Shaw was responsible for on field coaching, scouting and team academics. The 2008 club earned the team academic and ethics award from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
“I am very excited about the opportunity to coach at NC State University,” Shaw said. “It's great to be returning home, and I look forward to continuing to work with Steve Springthorpe in this exciting and challenging time for NC State women’s soccer.”
Shaw joined the Fresno State program after four years as the head women's soccer coach at Division II Mount Olive College in Mount Olive, N.C. There he compiled a 52-34 record, including a 49-19 mark over the final three seasons.
Mount Olive’s women's soccer program had never reached the .500 mark before Shaw’s arrival in 2003.
He was the 2004 CVAC Coach of the Year after setting a Division II record for a single-season turnaround, taking a program that had gone 3-15 the previous year to a 20-3 record. Mount Olive won its first conference championship that season as Shaw’s club led the nation in scoring offense.
The Trojans returned to the conference title game in 2005, where they once again finished in the top-10 in the nation in goals per game.
Under Shaw, Mount Olive had 13 all-conference selections, six All-Region honorees and a first team All-American, the first in program history.
Prior to working at Mount Olive, Shaw spent three years (1999-01) as an assistant coach with the men’s program at his alma mater, Methodist University in Fayetteville, N.C.
Additionally, he was the head coach of two North Carolina Olympic Development programs and spent the 2006 summer as the head coach in the USL Premier Development League for the Atlanta Silverbacks.
He was also the head coach of both the men’s and women’s programs at Pine Forest High School in Fayetteville from 2000-03.
Shaw possesses an "A" coaching license from the United States Soccer Federation and earned a Premier diploma from the NSCAA.
A 1994 graduate of Methodist, Shaw was a two-time All-Dixie Conference selection and earned All-America honors as a senior in 1993. After graduation, he played professionally for the Raleigh Flyers, before earning a Masters degree in exercise physiology at East Carolina in 1997. He was an assistant coach on the ECU men’s team in 1995.
