RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State Gymnastics set season-highs on bars and beam in winning the annual Sweetheart Invitational in Historic Reynolds Coliseum. The Wolfpack scored a 194.350 to defeat North Carolina (193.525), George Washington (192.575) and William & Mary (187.875).
"One of our goals is to beat North Carolina every time we see them, and we're now 2-for-2 this season," head coach Mark Stevenson said. "We are moving forward and achieving our season goals which is very important, I think."
For NC State, junior Taylor Seaman won bars and freshman Brooke Barr tied for first on vault. Sophomore Brittney Hardiman won the all-around at the meet with a 39.075, the third straight met that she scored over a 39.000 in the all-around.
The Wolfpack started on vault, and posted a strong 48.975 to get things going. Freshman Brooke Barr continues to produce, leading the team with an impressive vault and score of 9.875, good for first at the meet. Junior Taylor Seaman was close behind and posted a 9.825, third overall on vault.
Barr and Seaman have now scored a 9.850 or higher on vault in four of the seven meets. Sophomore Brittney Hardiman hit a 9.8, her fourth straight meet with a 9.8 or higher.
For the sixth time in seven meets, Seaman has hit a 9.8 or higher on bars, this time going 9.8 to lead NC State and to a season-high team score of 48.800. It was the top score at the meet. Hardiman was close behind with a 9.775, tying for second place. Junior Lauren Deuser, in just her second meet since tearing her achilles in the off-season, scored a 9.750 to tie with sophomore Brittany Vontz for fourth.
Freshman Anna Kronenfeld hit her career-high on beam to lead the team to a season-high 48.100. Kronenfeld scored a 9.750 to tie with Hardiman. Panza had a 9.725.
On floor, the Wolfpack scored a 49.475, led by Barr's 9.825, good for third at the meet.
Seaman finished second in the all-around with a 38.900, just behind Hardiman's leading 39.075.
The Wolfpack will now head to Nebraska for a tough challenge against the Cornhuskers, UCLA and Minnesota. Heading into this weekend, the Bruins are No. 2 in the nation, the Cornhuskers are No. 12 and Minnesota is No. 15.
"We will have a full week of practice this week and we were resting some kids trying to get them ready to go this past week," Stevenson said. "Coming off this week and we had some low scores on beam and floor, I think they will be pumped up and ready to get back in the gym to work on their routines. My expectation is that they will be ready to compete hard once we get to Nebraska, which is what you look for in athletes."
