RALEIGH, N.C. - The NC State volleyball team lost in three sets to Virginia on Sunday, Nov. 8, at Reynolds Coliseum. The loss moves the Wolfpack to 7-23 (0-15 ACC), while the Cavaliers climb to 11-15 (6-9 ACC).
Lisa Kretchman and Keri DeMar both recorded eight kills, while Margaret Salata and Kelly Wood each had seven. Alex Smith lifted 29 set assists, and Lindsay Benac secured 19 digs. Salata also recorded three block assists, while DeMar dropped the team’s lone service ace.
UVa took the opening set 25-20 despite five tied scores and three lead changes. An Isis Gardner kill put the Pack to within two points of knotting things up at 22-20 late in play, but the Cavaliers rattled off three-straight to grab the opening tally.
The second stanza finished exactly the same as the first, with Virginia grabbing a 25-20 decision after six tied scores and three lead changes. DeMar supplied five kills and Wood added four, but UVa out-hit the Pack .308 to .182 and took the lead for good at 10-9 on a Rachel Gray score.
The Pack led briefly in the third and final set, before falling 25-21. With NC State leading 9-13, the Cavaliers scored seven in a row to forge ahead at 16-13. The Pack later tied the score again at 18-18, but a Benac service error on the next point put UVa ahead the rest of the way.
NC State will hit the road for its next four games – all of which come against conference competition. Next weekend the Pack will travel to Boston College and Maryland.
