CARY, N.C. – Behind senior Ronnie Bouemboue’s first half goal, and classmate Christopher Widman’s ninth shutout of the season, the 15th-ranked NC State men’s soccer advanced to ACC Tournament finals after downing Boston College, 1-0, Friday night at WakeMed Soccer Park. The Wolfpack (13-5-2) will take on No. 6 Virginia Sunday at 1:00 p.m. for the ACC title.
“We are just very humble for the opportunity we have,” said NC State head coach George Tarantini. “This league is unbelievable, this means a lot. These seniors will leave NC State with a great memory (of making the finals). They have a great opportunity to play for this championship.”
The Pack would jump out to a quick 1-0 in just the seventh minute of play. Senior Alan Sanchez took a corner kick and found Bouemboue in the penalty box at the near post, who headed in his team leading eight goal of the season at the 6:33 mark.
“We work in practice everyday on corner kicks,” said Bouemboue. “I just make a run to the near post, and try to direct the ball towards the goal. I was lucky to get my head on it for the score today.”
NC State was on the offensive from the start, as the Pack recorded the first three shots of the contest. Sophomore Kris Byrd fired a shot just wide only 1:45 into the game, and Sanchez and fellow senior Federico Nachmann worked a two-on-one late in the half, but Sanchez’s shot was saved by Boston College’s Justin Luthy.
Boston College (12-8) ended the first 45 minutes with a 7-4 advantage on shots, but none of those attempts were on goal.
The back and forth play would continue in the second half of play. Senior Korede Aiyegbusi fired a shot from 30 yards out that was just wide in the 56th minute. Classmate Federico Nachmann also had a chance in the Eagle’s penalty box with 11 minutes left, but his shot was also wide.
Boston College was not without their second half chances. Substitute Mor Avi Hanan’s first touch of the game was a shot right on goal, but saved by Widman with 11 minutes left. The Eagles best chance was when Kevin Mejia hit the post with just eight seconds left, and the ball bounced out wide.
Boston College would outshoot the Pack 16-11 on the day, but only two shots by the Eagles were on goal. Widman made two saves for his second shutout in as many games at the ACC Tournament, and recorded his ninth blank sheet of the season.
“Our defense is really our whole team playing defense,” said Widman. “Every gets back behind the ball and is really well organized. We just were able to limit their opportunities, like we have done most of the year.
“This is a lot of fun right now. This is a great way to finish our ACC careers.”
