Volleyball Signs Three for 2010

RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State volleyball head coach Charita J. Stubbs announced the signing of three newcomers to the Wolfpack program on Thursday, Nov. 12. Jessica Groen, Anna Moore and Meredith Richardson will all join the team in time for the 2010 season. All three are expected to compete for the Pack immediately.
The 2008 New Mexico 5A state player of the year, Groen is a native of Las Cruces, N.M. A senior at Mayfield High School, she has played under head coach Michael Sautter. Last year as a junior she led the Trojans to a state title with 21 kills against Rio Rancho in the championship match. This past weekend she helped Mayfield collect its first district title since the 2005 season, and is currently in pursuit of another state crown.
So far this year Groen has recorded 324 kills in 75 sets played. She was named first-team all-state last season after collecting honorable mention all-state honors in 2007. Standing at 6-2, Groen will serve as an outside hitter for the Pack.
“We are really excited about adding Jessica,” said Stubbs. “She provides depth in a position we've had a shortage in, and she will compete for us immediately.”
Moore, a local Raleigh product out of Enloe High School under head coach Branden Green, stands at 6-1 and will serve as a middle blocker and opposite side. This year she recorded 236 kills and 23 service aces and helped the Eagles reach the third round of the NCHSAA 4A playoffs for the first time in school history after falling in the second round in each of the last two seasons. As a junior she was named Cap 7 Player of the Year, before receiving an award from the America Volleyball Coaches Association and being named first-team all-district this fall.
“Anna is a true scorer and is looking to make an immediate impact,” said Stubbs. “It is nice when you have talent in your city. She will bring a lot to the table.”
Richardson hails from Brentwood, Tenn. A 6-3 middle blocker at Ravenwood High School under head coach Tracey Berry, last month she helped lead her school to its first appearance in the state tournament in the program’s eight-year history, culminating with a runner-up finish in the Class AAA final. This season she led her district in blocks, and was named both all-district and district MVP. She also helped Ravenwood win district, regional and sectional tournaments this season.
“Meredith is a very talented and skilled player,” said Stubbs. “She is a strong player that will add both offense and defense, and has a knack for blocks and a presence around the net.”
