Volleyball Swept at Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG, Va. – NC State volleyball suffered a 3-0 loss to Virginia Tech on Thursday, Oct. 8 at Cassell Coliseum. The loss moves the Wolfpack to 7-13 (0-5 ACC), while the Hokies climb to 12-5 (2-4 ACC).
Lisa Kretchman fronted the Pack offensive attack with seven kills, while Keri DeMar added six. Alex Smith pushed up 22 set assists, and Margaret Salata and Isis Gardner each had four total blocks. DeMar’s 10 digs was a team-best.
The Hokies grabbed the first three points of the opening frame, but the Pack scored six-straight to mount its first lead. With the score knotted at 9-all, a three-point VT run put the Hokies ahead for good at 12-9. Another rally – this time six points - later moved the scoreboard to 19-11 before the Hokies won out at 25-17.
The Wolfpack offense really struggled in falling 25-14 in the second stanza. Landing seven kills, the Pack hit .071 while VT cruised on a match-high .364 clip.
The third and final bout saw three tied scores, but NC State was never able to grab the lead before falling 25-21. A combo block from Salata and Gardner tied the score at 20-20 late in play, but the Hokies immediately rattled off four-straight scores following a timeout on its bench.
Justine Record led VT with 10 kills.
NC State will take on Virginia tomorrow, Friday, Oct. 9, in Charlottesville, Va. Action will begin at 7 p.m.
