RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State volleyball grabbed the first two sets of play but was unable to withstand a late surge from Maryland in falling 3-2 in its home conference opener on Friday, Oct. 2 at Reynolds Coliseum. The loss moves the Pack to 7-11 (0-3 ACC) on the season, while the Terrapins improve to 10-8 (2-3 ACC).
Kelly Wood led the Pack offense with 18 kills, while Keri DeMar added nine and Lisa Kretchman supplied eight. Alex Smith (26) and Allison Davis (16) combined for 42 set assists, while Lindsay Benac recorded 14 digs. Kretchman’s three blocks was also a team best.
NC State put together what appeared to be its best effort of the season throughout the first two frames, picking up 24-26 and 17-25 victories. The Pack hit .333 in the opening round, eclipsing that with a match-high .480 in the second stanza, while Wood supplied 10 kills through the first two bars. NC State never once trailed during the second set.
But Maryland looked like a different team following a brief 10-minute intermission, rattling off three-straight set victories at 25-19, 25-12 and 15-5. The Terps hit .400 in the fourth set, using several scoring runs to put the Pack in a considerable hole.
NC State will resume play tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 3, against Boston College. Play will begin at 6 p.m. at Reynolds Coliseum.
